“When you face death, you really begin to think about what is most important. Starting Project Happy Hearts was at the top of that list,” Burns said. Burns now has plans to expand the company, and is in the process of launching an on-demand gift delivery service for hospital patients. The company also aspires to provide EKG tests to high school athletes. The company continues to give back. A portion of the proceeds from every purchase is used to grant “happy heart moments” for children recovering from heart surgery.

The years she spent working on her business were not always easy. At times, in dealing with both the business and her health, she faced fear, loneliness and sickness. But with a positive attitude, Burns not only managed to create a flourishing life and career but has also focused on the happiness of others.

One of Burns’ happiest moments was delivering a new snowboard to a 13-year-old boy who had suffered a cardiac arrest in her hometown Dana Point, Calif. The boy’s parents had posted on Facebook that their son wanted a snowboard, and Project Happy Hearts showed up at his home to surprise him with a new board and boots. “It is moments like these when humans can come together and make each other’s hearts happy,” Burns said.

Her business ambitions are many and plans are underway to launch an app and develop a method for customers to personalize heart pillows with a special message to send to loved ones. In addition, the company is launching a care package box that will be delivered directly to hospital patients. Burns is also looking forward to growing the clothing portion of the brand, so people can wear their happiness all over the world.
