Marni Goldenberg receives CAFES Outstanding Researcher Award

It is our sincere pleasure to announce Dr. Marni Goldenberg received the CAFES Outstanding Researcher Award.  Her accomplishments include numerous publications, reports, and presentations at the state, national, and international levels.

For an individual who has spent nearly her entire career in a regional university setting, Dr. Goldenberg's productivity is phenomenal.  She is a prolific writer and her scholarship and research activities are an important element of her role as a faculty member at Cal Poly.  She has followed a defined area of scholarship relating to means-ends analysis and has been able to apply this theory to a variety of populations and settings.  Her scholarship has assisted Cal Poly RPTA in becoming a highly recognized and respected academic program across the U.S.  In fact, faculty at other CSU campuses perceive that Cal Poly is the leader in research among our peer institutions.  Dr. Goldenberg's efforts can be credited with this significant recognition.   One of our recent interviewees for a faculty position commented that Dr. Goldenberg's scholarship productivity is on par with a leading scholar at the individual's doctoral degree granting, research 1 institution.

An aspect of Dr. Goldenberg's scholarship that has stood out is her ability to work extensively with graduate students and senior project students that has led to numerous presentations at state and national conferences and publications in peer reviewed journals including the Journal of Experiential Education, and the Journal of Outdoor Recreation, Education, and Leadership.

Over twenty undergraduate and graduate students have worked with Dr. Goldenberg in this capacity.  She has also co-authored two books for the recreation field, as well as authoring chapters in textbooks.  She has published thirteen peer-reviewed research articles since 2003.  To support her various research projects, she has received over $508,800 in grant funding since 2003.  For most projects she has served as the principal investigator.

Her innovative research relating to means-ends analysis has been recognized for its positive contributions to the outdoor/adventure field by such organizations as The National Leadership School (NOLS), Outward Bound, and the Pacific Crest Trail Association.  As a result of her research efforts she was invited to serve on the research advisory council for NOLS, as well as the council for the Wilderness Education Association.

Dr. Goldenberg has fully embraced the teacher-scholar model by including student participation in her research efforts and applying research outcomes to her teaching.  She is most deserving of recognition as a nominee for the CAFES Outstanding Researcher Award.
