EXCITING 2015 RPTA CLUB UPDATES

By Arianna Kamp (RPTA 15)

RPTA club members recreate together at the archery range in SLOIf winter quarter is any indication, 2015 is shaping up to be a standout year for the RPTA Club. Newly appointed club president Evan Weiss brings an exciting leadership style to one of the best clubs on campus. Weiss, alongside RPTA club members Emily Bishop, Natalie Tuckett, Jon Hoffman, and Rachel Romanelli are looking to mix things up with an array of new trips, events, volunteer opportunities, and guest speakers.

During fall quarter, RPTA club members and meeting attendees got a taste of what is available to them as far as volunteer, internship and event participation opportunities. A variety of local businesses and guest speakers came to several club meetings and shared the exciting new opportunities happening in the San Luis Obispo community.

Eco SLO, Eventbrite, and Tri Cal Events were among the highly reputable businesses that came to speak to students about new events and networking opportunities related to the RPTA field. In addition, several RPTA faculty members, including Professor Marni Goldenberg and lecturer Jamie Wallace, came in to discuss study abroad options and hospitality and tourism events. Weiss said he has been pleased with the number of students who have been involved with RPTA club this year, but would love to see the numbers increase. RPTA club officers are making a conscious effort to explore activities and guest speakers that relate to all aspects of the RPTA field including outdoor adventure, hospitality, tourism and event planning.

The 2015 final lineup of activities and speakers is always a work-in-progress.

The winter and spring 2015 quarters will include highly anticipated activities such as a ski trip to Yosemite, a handful of adventurous Poly Escapes trips, a Hearst Castle tour, and multiple visits from local RPTA professionals who will share industry news and potential job opportunities.

Weiss said the RPTA leadership team is constantly looking for speakers, events, activities, trips, and volunteer opportunities. Current club members, as well as anyone who wants to join, can look forward to volunteer outings such as tree planting in Nipomo, trail maintenance along the Bob Jones Trail in xxx, park clean up and maintenance with San Luis Obispo county park rangers, general trail restoration projects, and opportunities to volunteer at many local events such upcoming triathlons, marathons and fund raisers.

As any current club member can tell you, the guest speakers and activities are two important benefits of joining the club, but another less well-known perk -is the exciting participation incentives introduced by guest speakers. In the past, speaker have offered attendees fun freebies! For example, Collective Efforts provided free concert tickets, while other speakers who work in the industry were able to tell meeting attendees about internship and job opportunities before they were announced to the public.

To learn the latest club updates, contact Weiss or keep an eye out for RPTA club email updates. All club meetings are held in building 11, room 104, with meeting times yet to be determined. Can't wait to see fellow reccies there!
