SPECIAL THANKS!
STUDENTS, ALUMNI, FACULTY, & STAFF SHARE THEIR APPRECIATION FOR CYNTHIA MOYER'S 20 YEARS OF SERVICE TO RPTA
By Anthonia Edgren (RPTA '13), Editor, The Report
In her 20 years of outstanding service to both Cal Poly and the San Luis Obispo community, Professor Moyer has touched and influenced many lives and has aided students in not only finding their way, but prepared them to be successful. As Professor Moyer retires to a life of travel and family time, she will be dearly missed by those who were lucky enough to gain some of her insight and advice. Alumni, students, faculty, and staff have all been impacted by her contagious energy and love for life; below are words of thanks and appreciation from just a few of them:
“Professor Moyer gave me the tools and skills to feel confident entering the working world. She taught me so much both in and outside of the classroom.”
- Kalli Sandberg, Class of 2013
"Couldn't have done it without you"
- Jon Howard, Class of 2013
“Professor Moyer was with us from the very start to the very end of college. She desired to see us grow and be successful during our time here, and has done so much (especially behind the scenes) to make that happen. Freshman year, she had us write out a few goals that we had for our college career. I think that small assignment shows her big heart toward her students -- to challenge us to do big things and to accomplish our goals. Thanks for dreaming with us and for us Professor Moyer, and thanks for all of the very practical life and professional tips too! You're amazing.”
- Katie Nice, Class of 2013
"Professor Moyer has taught me so much. It was in RPTA 210 with her that I first got my hands on a real event for the 5K Midnight Fun Run. She taught me so much about the process and through the years she continued to teach me other important aspects of our industry. She is a pillar of support and a true friend. She will be dearly missed."
- Jamie Dehn, Class of 2013
“She always knows what you need before you even sit down in her office, then she knows exactly what to do! I wouldn't be graduating this spring without her help!”
- Katie Draeger, Class of 2013
“I had Professor Moyer for my very first RPTA class freshman year and to this day I still treasure the red spiral course book that she walked us through in that class, where we made our two-year plan and learned how to make it through this Cal Poly journey. SO SO SO thankful to have had her as my advisor - I don't know what I'm going to do without her next year.”
- Jackie Garcia, Class of 2014
“Professor Moyer is the best of the best. She was always very supportive of me and all of the crazy ideas I had with class projects, going abroad for my internship, and always listened to me when I needed to talk. The great thing about Professor Moyer is that she always told it to me straight and helped me decide what I wanted to do, never by forcing any of her opinions, but simply by listening and letting me talk everything out. Professor Moyer helped me get through college and the RPTA department won't be the same without her.”
- Kim Saavedra, Class of 2013
“Professor Moyer is one of my kindred spirits. She recognized my “old soul” early on at Cal Poly and provided me mentoring, encouragement, and advice that I still carry with me (and occasionally seek out!) today. She was my inspiration for continuing my education to the master’s level, as I dream of someday teaching and advising at the college level.”
- Elisa C. Cox (RPTA '03), Director of Human Resources & Public Information Officer, City of Sierra Madre
“Many years of processing RPTA Auction Final Bidder Forms with Professor Moyer has taught me the importance of organization and patience. With 100 excited RPTA family members and friends pushing through the line to collect their auction items - it was chaos...but Professor Moyer managed to create a sense of calm handling each purchase with a smile. I learned so much about the value of being detail-oriented and double-checking your work. I visited her office hours many times throughout my college career - mostly to seek advice about internships, clubs, and my future career. She always listened attentively and offered very caring responses and I appreciated her ability to communicate with such honesty.”
- Dana Matteson (RPTA '10), Conference Coordinator, Conference & Event Planning at Cal Poly
"I am very grateful for the time and effort Professor Moyer has put into RPTA because there are 1000's of students, including myself, better equipped to lead the future of recreation thanks to her. The most impressive thing about Professor Moyer is her attention to detail, and that she led every class with a smile, energy, and professionalism. Thanks for the great memories and lessons Professor Moyer!"
- Ryan Baker (RPTA '06), Conference Coordinator, Conference & Event Planning at Cal Poly
"Professor Moyer in her academic career has embodied what it means to be student-centered. While most of us enjoy some aspects of advising (like connecting with students), Professor Moyer enjoyed every aspect of advising and was simply the best at it. I believe that if we had asked her, she would have served as the advisor for all 300 students. She's been a trusted colleague, mentor, and friend to me. Thanks, Cynthia, you are one of a kind!"
- Brian Greenwood, Associate Professor, RPTA
"Professor Moyer has been a role model and mentor to both students and colleagues during her years at Cal Poly. I have been lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from her, grow with her, watch her teach and work with students, and most importantly see her make a positive impact in so many lives. She is my 'advising guru' that has greatly impacted all of Cal Poly. I will truly miss you Cynthia, and you make such a positive difference to us all!"
- Marni Goldenberg, Professor, RPTA
"There's no way to express how grateful I am to have had the fortune of landing in the office next to Cynthia. For seven years, she's been one of the best mentors and neighbors one could ask for. Whenever I needed advice, didn't know the answer to a student's advising question, or just wanted to visit, her door was always open. I'm so excited for this next stage in her life - I can't wait to see all of those beautiful quilts and bags she's going to hand craft - but I don't know what we will do without her. Thank you for everything!"
- Jerusha Greenwood, Associate Professor, RPTA
